Dental Hygiene Practical Examination – What to Expect

The Dental Hygiene practical examination assesses a combination of clinical reasoning, communication, infection control, and hands-on clinical skills across a series of structured stations.

*Candidates will receive a comprehensive demonstration of each task, followed by extensive hands-on practice under close supervision and personalised feedback.

*Throughout the program, candidates will have the opportunity to refine their techniques, identify and correct common mistakes, and build confidence in an exam-style environment.

Candidate will be assessed in the following areas:

  • Clinical information gathering – collecting relevant patient information and performing appropriate clinical assessments.
  • Communication – explaining findings, discussing care and interacting professionally with patients during scenario-based stations.
  • Diagnosis and management planning – interpreting clinical information, identifying key issues and developing an appropriate management approach.
  • Local anaesthesia – demonstrating safe and appropriate administration techniques.
  • Dental radiography – demonstrating correct radiographic procedures and appropriate clinical technique.
  • Periodontal examination – completing a structured periodontal assessment and recording relevant findings.
  • Ultrasonic instrumentation – demonstrating appropriate use of ultrasonic equipment for periodontal care.
  • Periodontal instrumentation – demonstrating hand-scaling techniques in different areas of the dentition, including:
    • Lower anterior teeth
    • Upper anterior teeth
    • Lower molars
    • Upper premolars and molars
  • Preventive and restorative procedures – including:
    • Fissure sealant placement
    • Temporary restoration using glass-ionomer material
  • Infection prevention and control – assessed throughout relevant technical and clinical stations.
